Our psychology services
At Ability Action Australia, our psychology clinicians provide support for people with an NDIS plan who struggle to achieve their goals due to mental health, behavioural or emotional difficulties.
With an NDIS plan that includes funding for therapeutic supports, our psychology clinicians can offer:
- Specialised clinical assessment
- Evidence-based intervention
- Reports tailored to NDIS requirements
We offer face-to-face NDIS psychology services in NSW, Victoria, TAS, QLD and WA either from one of our clinics or through our convenient mobile services where our clinicians come to you. We also offer services nationally via our Telehealth service.
How you benefit
Our Psychology service offers a broad variety of benefits for NDIS participants, including an improved ability for you to relate to family and friends, connect with your local community and enrich your quality of life.
There is strong evidence for the benefits of psychology for a range of participants, including those living with physical, psychosocial, neurological, sensory, cognitive and intellectual disability.
Like other allied health disciplines, the role of a NDIS psychology clinician is to help you reach your goals. Our psychology clinicians will complete a specialised clinical assessment to identify the mental health, behavioural and emotional conditions preventing you from working towards your goals, and then generate an individualised, evidence-based intervention plan to address these. The intervention our psychology clinicians provide could include:
- Assessment of cognitive or intellectual functioning, to support a better understanding of the challenges you face and facilitate more effective intervention
- Support and intervention of cognitive difficulties, such as problems with memory, attention, and planning
- Support with the adjustment to a new health condition or with challenges related to a lifelong disability
- Strategies to improve emotional regulation, inclusive of anger, anxiety, or sadness
- Skills to facilitate social interactions, social communication, and connections with others

Our therapy approach emphasises the importance of customised support that reflects the needs and goals of the individual. Every person we support is unique, and our NDIS psychologists tailor our psychology service to your needs.
Psychology and mental health counselling offer numerous benefits for individuals who are facing emotional, behavioural, or psychological challenges. Key benefits of NDIS counselling and psychology include:
- Emotional support: Psychology and counselling provide a safe and confidential space for individuals to express their emotions, thoughts, and concerns. It allows them to feel heard, validated, and supported, which can promote emotional well-being and reduce feelings of isolation.
- Improved mental health: Seeking counselling can contribute to improved mental health outcomes as it helps individuals gain a better understanding of their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours, enabling them to develop effective coping strategies and problem-solving skills.
- Enhanced self-awareness: Therapy facilitates self-reflection and self-exploration, leading to increased self-awareness. Through therapy, individuals can gain insight into their patterns of thinking, emotional triggers, and underlying factors contributing to their challenges.
- Coping skills development: Counselling equips individuals with valuable coping skills to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Psychologists can teach useful techniques such as relaxation exercises, cognitive restructuring, mindfulness, and effective communication, which can be applied in many aspects of life.
- Relationship improvement: Therapy can help individuals improve their relationships and communication skills by providing an opportunity to address relationship difficulties, enhance emotional intimacy, and develop healthier patterns of interaction with others.
- Support in life transitions: Major life transitions, such as loss, or relationship breakdowns, can be challenging to navigate. Counselling offers guidance and support during these transitions, helping individuals cope with the associated emotional and psychological adjustments.
- Stress and anxiety management: Counselling can provide effective strategies for managing stress and anxiety. Psychologists can assist individuals in identifying stressors, exploring coping mechanisms, and developing resilience to better handle life’s challenges.
- Increased self-esteem and self-acceptance: Therapy can aid in improving self-esteem and self-acceptance. It helps individuals challenge negative self-perceptions, develop self-compassion, and cultivate a more positive self-image.
- Prevention and relapse prevention: Psychology and counselling can play a preventive role by identifying potential mental health issues early on. For individuals who have experienced mental health challenges in the past, counselling can provide relapse prevention strategies and ongoing support.
